Axiotron together with its exclusive US Distributor Other World Computing (OWC) unveiled the ModBook, the first ever Mac OS X tablet computer solution at the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco this week.
The slate-style Axiotron ModBook incorporates Wacom Penabled hardware, the pen input technology, while the Mac OS X and provides build-in Inkwell handwriting recognition.
“The Axiotron ModBook is an after-market hardware modification kit for Apple MacBook laptop, adding true pen input, a new 13.3″ wide screen LCD and an optional Global Positioning System in a tough, satin chrome plated magnesium top shell, while keeping all the powerful features of the MacBook base system,” the Axiotron’s press release says.
As same as MacBooks, it comes with up to 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors, the integrated iSight camera and the CD/DVD combo drive.
The Axiotron ModBook is immediately available for pre-orders in the US and Canada through an arrangement between Axiotron and Other World Computing. The ModBook will be available in Europe in the second half of 2007.
Initial suggested retail prices begin at $2,279. During Macworld and until January 31st, Other World Computing is offering the complete ModBook base configuration plus the built-in Axiotron GPS Module at a Special Introductory Price of $2,199.

MacBooks 15.4-Inch Coming in Q2 2007
Apple is planning to introduce 15.4-inch MacBook laptop in the second quarter of 2007. The new model will fill the gap between the current Apple’s 13.3-inch MacBooks and the 15.4- and 17-inch MacBook Pros, DigiTimes reports according to industry sources in Taiwan.
It is expected that the prices for the 15.4-inch widescreen MacBooks are likely to be more competitive than their 13.3-inch counterparts, due largely to the relatively lower cost of 15.4-inch LCD panels, and will therefore help push further sales of MacBooks.

iSkin Announced SOHO Protective Sleeves for MacBooks
iSkin today announced SOHO, its new line of notebook protective sleeves for MacBook, MacBook Pro and similarly sized laptops. The SOHO sleeves are made from premium synthetic leather and dyed using only environmentally safe inks, according to manufacturer.
The SOHO is offered in a variety of flavors and is available in two separate sizes for the 13″ MacBook, 15″ MacBook Pro and also accommodates older PowerBooks, iBooks and similarly sized PCs.

Battery Update 1.2 for MacBook and MacBook Pro Released
Apple has released Battery Update 1.2 for MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops. The patch “updates battery firmware and improves battery functionality” and is released after the company discovered that some batteries used in its notebooks may have battery performance issues. However, if the affected batteries do not work properly after the installed Update, Apple will replace these batteries free of charge.
The factors causing the performance issues do not present a safety risk, so users may continue to use current batteries, according to Apple.

Toshiba’s AMD-Powered Notebooks Coming This Summer
Toshiba Corporation announced today it will put AMD processors in about 20 percent of the notebooks it sells in the United States and Europe. The laptop PC maker plans to use AMD chips in moderate-priced standard models for individual and corporate clients, Reuters reports.
The first AMD-powered notebooks from Toshiba will be released this summer reportedly.
The Nikkei business daily reported earlier that prices of AMD-equipped PCs are expected to sell for up to $82 less than comparable models.
Currently, all of the Company’s notebooks available in the market are based on Intel’s processors.

Dell Brings Back Windows XP on Laptops, Desktops
Dell has brought back Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system option to its Inspiron laptops, as well as to select Dimension desktop PCs, after the visitors of Dell IdeaStorm Blog voted for that idea.
“We heard you loud and clear on bringing the Windows XP option back to our Dell consumer PC offerings. Based on your feedback, the following Dell consumer systems with Windows XP are now immediately available on Dell.com: Inspiron: 1405, 1705, 1505, 1501 and Dell Dimension: E520, E521,” Company announced.

NVIDIA will release this summer GeForce 8800M series video cards, which will be the most powerful graphics processors for notebooks. The mobile 8800 GPUs, designed for gaming laptops, will be based on the new chip code-named NB8E, The Inquirer reports.

MS CRM 3.0 Workflow HTML Word Wrap
After searching and searching and not having any success with finding a way to enable word wraping when sending an MS CRM 3.0 Workflow generated email, I found a way to make it work!
In workflow manager, edit the event to create an email, in the body of the email use the following code when you want to enable word wrapping to receipts in the html formated email.
This will word wrap the text sent from workflow manager events instead of send a long line of text that a user would have to scroll to the right to read when in Outlook. Works great for me, hope this helps someone else that was frustrated by this as well.

Windows Live Messenger Error 81000306 on Vista
Ran into a problem where a Vista machine joined to our corporate domain would not allow you to logon to Live Messenger. If the same machine was taken outside the office it would connect without problem. SO after searching and searching, upgrading to the Beta 8.1 (Still did not work), found a solution that worked.
Try this:
- Click start
- Type: cmd
- Right-click cmd.exe when it appears under Applications
- Click Run As Administrator
- Type the following: netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
- Press enter
- Restart your computer
To check autotuning is disabled repeat the above but type: netsh int tcp
show global
This worked for me when all other fixes and work-arounds did not.

With AOL there is a lovely report spam button that you can use when you feel that a message you receive is a spam email message. If you get enough complaints then you will start getting these return messages when you send to any of the aol.com domains. The person in question had a virus on their PC an so they were blacklisted by aol. I was surprised to be greeted with absolutely no hold time when I called their postmaster phone number (888)-212-5537. It has been a while since I picked up a phone to contact AOL and I must say the experience was overall a good one. The representative was extremely helpful. The IP address that the client had did not show in their records so the representative provided me with an email address that will return the IP address that AOL is seeing. If you sent an email to ipconfirm@postmaster.aol.com, then you will get a response back with the guilty IP address. You will have to send the email to the ipconfirm address from the computer that the emails are being returned to or through the email server that they are being returned to. The representative at the number was nice enough to go ahead and remove it from their list, but suggested setting up a feeback loop going forward. The feedback loop will kick you an email anytime they get an email you send that one of their members designates as spam. This can be very helpful if you have a mail server and have one party that is sending out spam mail.

MS CRM 3.0 on Windows 2003 R2 x64
Well I was planning on install CRM 3.0 tonight for a client that was until I started receiving errors about IIS 5 or greater not being install on the server. Checked and sure enough it was install on the server and functioning. After some more attempts and then researching the issue found out that CRM 3.0 will not install on x64 OS. So much for install CRM 3.0 tonight, planning on installing x86 OS tomorrow and trying again.

After installing Exchange 2007 on a brand new Windows 2003 x64 install everything seemed to be going well until OWA would not work. It would not respond or anything. The error below would show up in the event log.

ISAPI Filter 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\60\bin\stsfltr.dll' could not be loaded due to a configuration problem. The current configuration only supports loading images built for a AMD64 processor architecture. The data field contains the error number.
After searching and searching and not finding much that specifically addressed this, started digging in more and found that Sharepoint Services 2.0 had been installed on the server. Sharepoint Services 2.0 runs in 32bit emualtion mode and it appears that it was conflicting with OWA running in 64bit.
After going into to add/remove programs and removing Sharepoint Services 2.0 immediately after I was able to get a Exchange 2007 OWA login to appear in the browser. Then tested with IE7 and FireFox and was able to login with multiple user accounts.

Adobe InDesign CS3 Crashes on Startup msvcrt.dll
Leave it to me to find a challenge / bug or whatever you want to call it in the new Adobe InDesign CS3. So I setup a brand new Dell OptiPlex 745, Windows XP SP2, 4 GB Ram, 250 GB HD, Core 2 Duo Processor...you get the picture. The machine was not part of a domain (yet), I installed all the MS Updates and then install Adobe CS3 Design Standard on to the machine. Launched InDesign and it seemed fine, used it to test convert a PageMaker file.
So in prep of setting the computer up at the users desk I joined to the Domain and logged in as the user to setup Outlook, etc. - So I launch InDesign to do some more testing and as it is loading "starting up service registry" it crashes, details show msvcrt.dll as the offender. I went so far as to uninstall and reinstall CS3 which takes a while, with the same results. I log in as the administrator on the computer (the user that originally installed it) and it worked fine. So I downloaded Microsoft's (Sysinternal's) RegMon with no real red flags there I downloaded FileMon. As I ran FileMon I noticed right before it started to create the Adobe Dump file that it was going through printer files. So I checked to make sure that I had a printer installed on the machine (some programs don't like when there is no printer installed on the machine) and found that is was set to our connected copier by default. For ShiGrins I changed the default to the AdobePDF printer and restarted InDesign - Magically it launched without any problems.
I rebooted and tested again and again and it seems to be working now, even after I set the default printer back to the one it was originally.

Intel's 975X Expess gets the "Bearlake" upgrade
Intel will unveil the high-end version of its Bearlake-family next month – the Intel X38 Express. The new Intel X38 Express replaces the 975X Express, which launched over a year ago with Intel’s Presler Netburst processors. The new chipset introduces new features to Intel’s high-end enthusiast and workstation platform such as PCIE 2.0 and DDR3 memory.

New to the Intel X38 Express is support for dual full-speed PCIe 2.0 x16 slots. The dual PCIe 2.0 slots are compatible with AMD’s CrossFire technology for multi-GPU graphics processing. Motherboard manufacturers are also free to equip Intel X38 Express based boards with a third physical PCIe 2.0 x16 for triple-play physics. Due to chipset limitations, the third physical PCIe 2.0 x16 slot has lesser lanes, with most manufacturers opting for four lanes.

Biostar also adds one PCIe x1 and two PCI slots into the mix. The TX38D3-A7 also features onboard power and reset buttons for the tweaking-inclined.

Both boards have similar feature sets, with the GA-X38T-DQ6 offering DDR3 support while the GA-X38-DQ6 supports DDR2. Gigabyte takes DDR3 further than other manufacturers by claiming support for DDR3-1600 memory. Gigabyte has opted to equip its GA-X38x-DQ6 motherboards with two PCIe 2.0 x16 slots. New to the Gigabyte X38 Express-based motherboards is the Realtek ALC889A high-definition audio codec, offering a 106dB signal-to-noise ratio.
Intel also plans to join in on the X38 Express festivities with the successor to the D975XBX2 BadAxe2. The new DX38BT Bonetrail features three physical PCIe 2.0 x16 slots. The DX38BT is the only motherboard currently on the Computex show floor without an elaborate heat-pipe cooling setup. Instead, Intel sticks with a simple aluminum cooler.

Lastly is MSI with the X38 Diamond. MSI manages to squeeze four physical PCIe 2.0 x16 slots into the X38 Diamond. Two of the PCIe 2.0 x16 slots are full-speed while the other two slots are half-speed. MSI also squeezes in support for DDR2-800 and DDR3-1333 memory on the same board.
Expect Intel to officially launch the X38 Express next month, coinciding with the upcoming Core 2 Duo E6x50-series.
